Sludge thickening :
The thickening aims to increase the dryness (dry matter content) of the sludge without modifying the liquid character of the sludge. This thickening can be done simply by gravity by mechanical means (draining or flotation). The dryness of the thickened sludge leaving the equipment is between 6 and 8%.

Dehydration of sludge :
Dehydration corresponds to a strong increase in dryness, modifies the physical state of the sludge, the latter passing from the liquid state to the pasty or solid state.
